About Leeway
About Leeway
Leeway is a New Haven nonprofit and the only care facility in Connecticut dedicated solely to people living with HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1995, it combines skilled nursing, residential care, permanent supportive housing, and case management on a single continuum of care, so residents can move from intensive medical support toward independent living without leaving the Leeway network.
What does Leeway do?
Leeway provides medical, nursing, and behavioral health care for adults living with HIV/AIDS and the conditions that often accompany it, including addiction, mental health diagnoses, and other chronic illnesses. Care is delivered across four connected programs:
Skilled Nursing (30 beds): 24-hour clinical care, including infectious disease management, short-term rehabilitation, wound care, and palliative care.
Residential Care Home (30 beds): Supervised living with medication assistance and case management for residents who no longer need 24-hour nursing.
Permanent Supportive Housing (41 units): Long-term, affordable homes across New Haven paired with onsite support services.
Community Case Management: Help with benefits, healthcare navigation, and the social services that keep people in care.
Who does Leeway serve?
Leeway serves adults in the Greater New Haven area and surrounding states who are living with HIV/AIDS, frequently alongside substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or chronic illness. Residents come through referrals from hospitals, clinics, physicians, and community agencies.
Where is Leeway located?
Leeway is located at 40 Albert Street, New Haven, CT 06511, along a major bus line, which keeps residents connected to the wider New Haven community. The main phone line is (203) 865-0068.
Why was Leeway founded?
Leeway was founded in 1995 by Catherine Kennedy, a Yale School of Management graduate, to care for individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS in New Haven. At the time, an HIV/AIDS diagnosis was widely considered fatal. Treatment has since transformed the disease from fatal to chronic, and Leeway has shifted with it — from end-of-life care toward recovery, stability, and community reintegration.
What makes Leeway different?
Leeway is the sole facility in Connecticut that serves only people living with HIV/AIDS, rather than treating it as one condition among many. That focus shows up in specialized clinical expertise, integrated addiction and mental health services, and a continuum that carries a resident from a skilled-nursing bed all the way to their own apartment.
"We, as a family, could not be more thankful that our mother and sister is in your loving hands at Leeway. We thank you for the care that is always so beautifully provided." — William Wallen

A Message from Leeway’s Executive Director
Welcome to Leeway, founded in 1995 by the late great Catherine Kennedy. Catherine, a graduate of the School of Management at Yale University, had a vision and dreamed of caring for the individuals and families suffering from the HIV/AIDS virus in the New Haven Community. Leeway is a licensed (30) bed chronic nursing facility with (30) Residential Care Beds and (41) Units of Housing. We are the sole facility in Connecticut that serves only individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Today, Leeway Inc. serves, cares for, and gives all our residents a second chance at life. As you will see in our communications, “HOPE happened at Leeway.”
The Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Physical Therapist, all other clinical staff, Admissions staff, Business office staff, Chaplin office, Environmental Associates, Dietary Associates and Security Associates are all part of a team that truly keeps hope alive at Leeway. Despite our long history of serving residents throughout the Connecticut area and surrounding states, many of you don’t know that we are here and can help.
HIV/AIDS has attacked all levels of our communities at every socioeconomic strata and continues to leave its mark. The good news is that the treatment of HIV/AIDS has transformed the disease from fatal to chronic. That means that we now have the ability to treat HIV/AIDS successfully, and at Leeway, we see the miracles of treatment happening every day.
We provide many services at Leeway to support our residents’ needs. In addition to excellent direct clinical care, we have many services for addictions. We also provide supportive housing for the community and many of our Leeway Alumni. If you have not visited Leeway, I hope that you take a moment to learn more about Leeway as we are today and how we can help you and your loved ones.
The State of Connecticut fully accredits Leeway and maintains the strongest dedication to providing both quality of care and quality of life for our patients and residents. This is why we say, “HOPE happens at Leeway.? These are not just words to us; it is our mission, our vision and our commitment.
Sincerely,
Jay Katz
